Energy Drinks Or Food For Your Energy?

If you routinely don't have the energy to do what you need to do, check up on your habits before buying energy drinks. There's a new report out warning against energy drink use by children and teens. I would expand that recommendation to include adults too. No one needs energy drinks.

Here are some things you should check:

1. Are you getting enough sleep? Four or 5 hours of sleep a night is not enough rest. The sleep debt will catch up with you. Be sure and register for the Free book, "Master Your Sleep."

2. How nutritious are your meals? Are you eating enough? Get your nutrition primarily from food. And, I recommend taking supplements such as multivitamins, fish oil and green tea.

If you want “The TRUTH” when it comes to losing fat with proper nutrition, you have to check out my friend's site: Isabel De Los Rios is one of America’s top nutrition experts and educators.

3. When's the last time you had a complete physical exam? There could be medical reasons for your low energy.

4. You might be dehydrated. “Water serves as a medium for the body to perform its life-sustaining functions, such as regulating body temperature and eliminating waste,” says Toby Amidor, a registered dietician in New York City. “If you don’t ingest enough water to help these metabolic reactions occur, you’ll become tired or lightheaded.”

Drink about half your weight in water each day. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink about 75 ounces of water each day.

5. Maybe you are too caffeinated. Because it is a stimulant to the central nervous system, caffeine can make you tired. Cheryl Forberg, a registered dietician says, "a once-a-day dose in the morning in tea or coffee is fine."

"But people can create a vicious cycle when they keep ingesting more caffeine to counteract the exhaustion they feel after the previous dose wears off." And, she adds, "the cumulative effects of the day’s caffeine—such as increased heart rate and a rise in blood pressure—can also keep you from getting a good night’s sleep."

6. You don't get enough exercise. You know how energized you feel after exercising? Enough said.

As for the report: "We would discourage the routine use by children and teens," said Dr. Steven Lipshultz, pediatrics chairman at the University of Miami's medical school. He wrote the report with colleagues from that center.

The report says energy drinks often contain ingredients that can enhance the jittery effects of caffeine or that can have other side effects including nausea and diarrhea. It says they should be regulated as stringently as tobacco, alcohol and prescription medicines.

"For most children, adolescents, and young adults, safe levels of consumption have not been established," the report said.

I say, get your energy primarily from food and you will have what you need to live an active life.

Forget About Fat Burner Supplements!

Here's another reason that you should forget about fat-burner supplements and save your money! Get your nutrition from whole foods! It makes common sense and your bank account will be alot fatter! DON'T LOOK FOR SHORTCUTS TO FAT LOSS AND FITNESS!

The FDA has recalled 72 weight loss products due to "risky" ingredients.

"Some of the products claim to be 'natural' or to contain only 'herbal' ingredients, but actually contain potentially harmful ingredients not listed on the product labels or in promotional advertisements," the FDA said. "These products have not been approved by the FDA, are illegal, and may be potentially harmful to unsuspecting consumers."

The FDA went on to state that these products contained prescription strength amounts that exceeded the recommended dosage and could cause health risks. Reactions could range from high blood pressure, seizures, tachycardia, palpitations and increased risk of depression.

The tried and true formula will give you the fat loss, weight loss and health you want: regular exercise and good nutrition! Don't waste time and money on supplements!

Eat Your Protein And Build Muscle

Notice I said to eat your protein to build muscle....I have always said to get your nutrition mainly from food...there's plenty of protein in the foods we eat...Good food sources for protein are:

lean beef, lean chicken, fish, eggs, milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, cheeses, beans, peas, nuts and seeds. If you are vegetarian, there are plenty of protein food sources for you.

Include protein in every meal....it helps you stay fuller for a longer period of time (it digests more slowly) which will help you eat less...this is important to help you achieve fat loss and weight loss goals.

I've never done the protein drink thing but there are those who swear by it. I know one thing for sure---whole, natural foods work best for your body and you will save alot of money by not buying supplement drinks.....BESIDES, FOOD TASTES BETTER AND ONE REASON I EAT IS TO ENJOY THE TASTE!

Your body needs a steady supply of protein to repair and build muscle tissue, especially after a tough weight training workout...so, how much daily protein do you need? Here's a good guide to follow:

Daily protein needs should be calculated according to body weight (not by percent of calories). Daily protein targets (grams per pound of body weight) are:

Sedentary adult, 0.4
Recreational exerciser, adult 0.5-0.75
Competitive athlete, adult 0.6-0.9
Growing teenage athlete 0.8-0.9
Adult building muscle mass 0.7-0.9
Maximum usable amount by adults 0.9 (your body will excrete excess protein)

For example, if you weigh 190 pounds and want a high protein intake (0.9 gms/lb), you'll need 171 grams of protein. Protein should be eaten at least every 3-4 hours to insure adequate supply during the day. Your night meal should be comprised of slowly digesting protein (such as lean meats) that will give a constant release of amino acids into your system overnight.

Of course, hydration is also very important for your muscles. Drink daily about a half an ounce of water for every pound of body weight (180 pound person would drink 90 ounces).

EAT your protein!
