Tone Hips And Butt With Lateral Lunge Steps

Tone your hips and butt (glutes) better by including lateral lunge steps in your workout routine.

Butt, hips and thigh fat can be stubborn fat areas for many women and men. Doing dynamic leg exercises on your feet will help you burn more leg fat and calories.

Sprints also help you burn fat faster! Sprinting is one of the best ways to help get your legs and total body lean and toned.

You will also improve your dynamic flexibility with lateral lunge steps. As an exerciser, you MUST improve your dynamic flexibility in the frontal plane of motion (side to side movements).

The exercise is done by shifting your weight to the right and then to the left followed by a pivot. This leaves you facing in the opposite direction and the exercise is repeated.

The frontal plane of motion is often "under-trained" by exercisers and that's a big mistake! Many daily movements are done with side-to-side or lateral motions. You will prevent many injuries by developing strong, flexible hips and glutes.

Burn More Fat With Challenging Exercises

If you want to burn more fat, do more challenging exercises! Challenge yourself with exercises that test your balance, coordination, strength and flexibility! This might require that you put that old favorite workout on the shelf and try something new! If you do, I guarantee you will burn more fat and lose more weight!

Try some of these challenging exercises:

1. Incorporate many one-legged exercises such as power step ups, single leg squats, single leg good mornings, single leg medicine ball exercises, etc. These types of exercises are more intense than two-legged exercises.

2. Include exercises with your eyes closed to improve limb position sense (proprioception). This will also help you burn more fat and calories!

3. Exercise your body in all 3 planes of motion to improve multi-planar balance. An example would be a grouping of walking lunges, side lunges and transverse lunges.

4. Exercise on different surfaces such as grass, sand, astro-play and soft surfaces to add more challenge.

5. Do combinations of one-arm and one-leg exercises such as single leg squat-to-single arm shoulder press.

6. Jump rope every day using different variations---two feet, one foot, shuffle, etc. Jumping rope is one of the best body coordination exercises out there. And, speed jump rope is even better to burn more fat.

7. Quickness and agility drills will burn fat like crazy and improve your dynamic balance.

Balance training also improves your core strength.

Challenge yourself more and watch the fat melt away!

Lateral Cone Hops Burn Leg Fat

Use lateral cone hops to burn leg fat and improve your strength and power in the frontal plane of motion. Hops and jumps are very intense exercises that activate that bulkier, shapely fast twitch muscles fibers in your butt, hips and thighs.

The frontal plane is an imaginary bisector that divides the body into equal front and back halves. The motions primarily involve abduction and adduction (side-to-side motions).

Abduction takes your limb away from the midline of your body and adduction takes your limb closer to the midline of your body. Examples include exercises performed on hip abductor and hip adductor machines. Other frontal plane motions would be lateral lunges, dumbbell lateral shoulder raises and lateral spinal flexion.

Lateral cone hops are done as fast as possible. Also, your feet should remain on the ground as little as possible as you do the hops. Focus on hopping (not jumping) from side to side (on the balls of your feet) with very little vertical height. You are working to improve lateral strength and power with this exercise and not vertical power. Do 8-10 repetitions per set.

As you progress, you can begin to do single leg lateral cone hops. Train hard, safe and burn more leg fat!

Lateral Tube Walk Tones Lower Body

The Lateral Tube Walk is a strength exercise that tones your lower body. It also looks like an easy exercise to perform. Don't be fooled by appearances. When done correctly, the lateral tube walk will challenge your strength (especially in the frontal plane), endurance and balance.

The lateral tube walk will strengthen and tone your butt, hips, core, adductors (inner thighs) and outer thighs.

Do the exercise this way:

1. Attach the resistance band just above each ankle. Place your feet shoulder-width apart with your knees slightly bent and your back straight.

2. Maintaining good posture, step your right foot out to the side about 2 shoulder-widths apart. Then, step your left foot inward until your feet are again shoulder-width apart. Your knees should remain aligned over your feet during the exercise. It is important to not let your knees "cave in" or spread outside your feet. Also, keep your glutes contracted during the exercise.

3. Do 10-15 steps in the same direction and repeat in opposite direction. That is one set. Do 2-3 sets.

If you've never done the lateral tube walk, try it during your next workout. It is an exercise you should do on a regular basis.

Leg Curl With Medicine Ball

Leg curls are very important for strengthening your hamstrings and avoiding injuries.

Hamstring injuries can have a long recovery period. Its best to avoid hamstring injuries. And, weak hamstrings can lead to other serious injuries. For example, females tend to have weaker hamstrings because they use their quadriceps muscles more while walking and running. This means females use their strong quadriceps muscles and do not adequately activate their weak hamstrings. The two opposing muscle groups would not be balanced in this situation.

The hamstring muscle group acts to protect the anterior cruciate knee ligament (ACL) and the opposing quadricep muscle group places stress on the ACL. So, if you are quadricep dominant, you are placing excessive stress (and many times serious injury) on the knee ACL.

If you don't have a leg curl machine available, just do your leg curls with the medicine ball.

Pushup Plank Exercise

Try the pushup plank exercise to change up your routine and challenge your body. You should always be concerned with improving your core strength. The pushup plank will help you progress with your core strength.

Get in the pushup position and balance on your toes while keeping your body in a straight line. Hold the plank position for the required count without moving. Keep your head in line with your torso and brace your torso (as if taking a punch to the gut).

The pushup plank is an isometric bodyweight exercise which helps you build strength and burn fat without moving much. They are great for building muscles, stabilizing muscles, building strength, improving power and burning fat.

Isometric contractions can be described as a type of muscle contraction where your muscles develop tension without changing length.

Isometric contractions force most if not all of your muscles to work during an exercise. Do the pushup plank your next workout!

Saturday Exercise On-The-Go

If Saturday is a busy crazy day for you, get your exercise on-the-go. There are many ways to exercise besides going to the gym or waiting until your "workout time." On a busy Saturday, if you wait until "workout time," you probably won't exercise at all!"

So, here are some "on-the-go exercise tips" for you on a busy Saturday:

1. If your kid has a team practice, don't just watch. Take a walk or jog.

2. Join a league soccer or basketball team. You will usually have a game or practice on Saturday.

3. Do your yardwork or household chores.

4. If you take your kids to the mall, walk around the mall while they spend your money!

5. Remember to pack and plan your meals instead of eating fastfood on-the-go.

6. Participate in that dance class, spin class or swim class on Saturday morning. This is a good way to get your Saturday started.

7. Walk the dog in the morning and evening.

8. If you watch television during the day, do a bodyweight workout during your favorite show.

9. Finish that paint job or fence job at your house!

10. If all else fails, do your regularly scheduled workout!

Just exercise on a busy Saturday any way you can! If you have some tips, let us know!

Marching Bridge Tones Butt, Stabilizes Core

Use the marching bridge exercise to tone your butt and stabilize your core. The marching bridge will also strengthen your lower back. Many people develop low back problems because too little time is spent strengthening the muscles of the lower back.

1. Start by lying on your back with your knees bent and your hands by your sides.

2. Lift your body off the ground into a straight line and brace your torso (like taking a punch to the gut). Don't let your body sag.

3. Lift your right leg, contract your glute and hold for 3 seconds. Lower your leg and do the same with your left leg. That's one repetition. Do 8-10 repetitions.

Other great core exercises that will strengthen your lower back muscles are cobras, stability ball plank, supermans and back extensions.

Don't neglect to strengthen your lower back muscles! You will pay with pain and injuries if you ignore training your lower back!

Ab Ball Curl Up

The ab ball curl up is a good core exercise if done correctly. Your rectus abdominis (6-pack part of your abs) and obliques should do most of the work.

Lie on your back on the ball, knees bent about 90 degrees, hands behind head and feet flat on the floor.

Lie on the ball so that your back hugs the ball. Your shoulders and neck shouldn't assist your abdominals during the movement.

The movement should be slow. Curl up and bring your chin towards your chest (to about 45 degrees). Curl up through the upper back and not the neck. Brace your abs during the movement (as if someone is going to punch you in the gut). Keep your ears and shoulders in alignment. DON'T ROUND YOUR LOWER BACK WHEN LIFTING YOUR TORSO!

Use your abdominals to curl your upper back up. Don't move any other body part and keep your arms, shoulders, neck and legs relaxed as the abs pull you up. Your head and arms should curl up with your shoulders.

Don't tilt your pelvis or pull with your thighs to lift your upper body. Hold for 2-3 seconds and return slowly to the starting position.

Use your abdominals to lower your upper back. Don't move your head or arms as you return to the start position.

Clock Lunges

Add clock lunges to your exercise routine to better sculpt your butt, hips, upper legs and lower legs and help them look better in 3-D space!

Many of you do forward lunges, reverse lunges and walking lunges. These exercises work your lower body in one plane of motion (sagittal). I don't see enough people doing side lunges and transverse lunges.

If you will do clock lunges, you are covered in all 3 planes of motion, your legs will look better and they will be more balanced.

Do clock lunges this way (bodyweight or with dumbbells):

Lunge with your right leg at 12 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 5 o’clock and 6 o’clock. That’s 1 repetition for your right leg. Lunge with your left leg at 12 o’clock, 10 o’clock, 9 o’clock, 7 o’clock and 6 o’clock. That’s 1 repetition for your left leg. Maintain upright posture throughout to improve core strength.

Fat Loss And Weight Loss--Sooner, 1

Reach your fat loss and weight loss goals---sooner! To do this, you need to make some changes to your program! Here's an example:

I have a friend who insists on working out for 2 long, dragging hours with little or no results! My answer to her is always the same: shorten your weight training workouts to 50 minutes or less and ramp up the intensity! In other words, work harder for a shorter period of time and you'll get more fat burn and calorie burn during and after your workout!

Do as many compound strength exercises (with weights or bodyweight) standing up as possible. These types of exercises work major muscle groups and many times are full-body strength exercises. Squats, deadlift, lunges, standing bentover rows, squat-to curl-to press and bench press are great examples. Full-body core exercises like planks and side planks work well also. Spend less time posing on "mirror exercises" like bicep curls, calf raises and tricep extensions.

Here is a good fat-burning workout:

Do each exercise one after the other with little or no rest between exercises. Rest 3 minutes between circuits. Do the circuit 4 times.

1. Bulgarian Split Squats, 15 repetitions each leg
2. Plank, 15 repetitions, 5 second hold
3. Pushups on Medicine Ball, 20 repetitions
4. Step Ups with Knee Lift (knee high platform), 10 repetitions each leg
5. Pullups, 10 repetitions
6. Clock Lunges, 5 repetitions each leg
7. Standing dumbbell shoulder press, 10 repetitions
8. Repeat circuit 3 more times.

This type of workout will help you break through your fat loss and weight loss plateau.

There's more you need to do to get fat loss and weight loss---sooner! Stay tuned....

Top 5 Fat Loss Strength Exercises

Strength exercises for fat loss should focus on maximizing your time at the gym...build more lean muscle mass to speed up your metabolism and burn more fat.

To recruit more muscle fibers during workouts and improve your success, focus more on MULTI-JOINT OR COMPOUND EXERCISES.

COMPOUND EXERCISES will help you burn more fat because you are working large muscle groups in your body. For example, the largest muscle in the body is the gluteus maximus and squats/lunges would target this area (among other areas). You will also burn more calories after your workout.

Examples of SINGLE-JOINT EXERCISES are biceps curl, seated calf raise, leg extension, leg curl and triceps pushdowns. Spend less of your time on these exercises.

Here are my Top 5 Fat Loss Strength Exercises:

1. Squats - Bodyweight, dumbbell or barbell....do your squats!

2. Deadlift - Deadlift is a must for your exercise program. It is also one of the best ways to build muscle thickness in your lower back. Lower back fat is a problem for many people.

3. One-arm dumbbell rows and Pullups - These two are a must for any routine so I'm counting them as one exercise.

4. Clock Lunges - Clock lunges work your body in all planes of motion. That’s 1 repetition for left leg. Maintain upright posture throughout to improve core strength.

5. Dumbbell Chest Press on Ball - Doing the chest press on the ball forces you to balance while lifting. Each arm also has to do equal work.

Note: I also include exercises like standing shoulder presses, step ups, pushups on medicine ball and tricep bar dips in my workouts.

Fat-Burning Bodyweight Leg Exercise Circuit

Burn more leg fat with a bodyweight leg exercise circuit....

Bodyweight leg circuits is a tried and true method to burn more leg fat, increase strength/endurance and improve heart health.

Since this workout is circuit-style, you also get the benefit of a great cardio workout. Do each exercise (10-12 repetitions) one after the other with little or no rest between exercises. Rest 2-3 minutes and do the circuit 2 more times. Here is a good bodyweight leg circuit program:

--Y squats
--Step ups with knee lift (with knee high platform)
--Tuck jumps or squat jumps
--Walking lunges with upper body rotation
--Side lunges

Get after it!
